Majola given nod to head Human Rights Commission SOUTH AFRICA

CAPE TOWN – The National Assembly on Tuesday approved the nomination of Bongani Majola as chairman of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) as well as six commissioners for appointment by President Jacob Zuma.

Majola was the assistant secretary-general of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and was shortlisted recently for the post of public protector, which was filled by Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

The National Assembly also approved the nomination by the portfolio committee on justice of Devikarani Priscilla Sewpal as deputy chairman of the SAHRC.

The five commissioners are advocates Andre Gaum, Jonas Sibanyoni and Joseph Malatji, former ANC leader Chris Nissen and Angelina Makwetla, chairman of the National Arts Council.
