Former prisoner sues ministry of justice for R4m as correctional services confirms probe into two assault claims at East London jail ZIYANDA ZWENI and SITHANDIWE VELAPHI The correctional services department has confirmed two assault cases are under investigation as allegations of abuse emerged from the women's prison in East London at the weekend, with one woman filing a multimillionrand civil claim. Serving and former female inmates at the Correctional Centre in West Bank have made damning allegations against some prisonwarders, accusing them of physical abuse and other criminal acts. A former warder at the facility has given credence to some allegations including that inmates were beaten with batons and fists saying this was a commonplace occurrence.

The SA Human Rights Commission's Eastern Cape office has been inundated with complaints about a lack of basic rights, such as access to clean water, road infrastructure, health, food, dignity and education. The Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay metros lead the charge in bringing submissions to the commission. Complaints include violations of sections 27, 10 and 29 of the Bill of Rights. Section 27 deals with the right of access to healthcare services, including reproductive healthcare, sufficient food and water and social security.

The Eastern Cape Human Rights Commission has been forced to subpoena officials from the OR Tambo district municipality and Transnet to an inquiry into the state of the province's roads, after Transnet and municipal officials were noshows at a hearing in November. The representatives were forced to appear before the commission in East London on Monday. The inquiry was prompted by a surge in complaints about Eastern Cape roads, which complainants said were significantly hindering access to their fundamental rights.

After its inquiry into the July 2021 riots, the SA Human Rights Commission says it can't link them to the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma, and doesn't know who the chief instigators were. Chris Barron asked commissioner PHILILE NTULI ... Your inquiry found the riots were orchestrated by wellresourced "primary actors". How can you not know who they were? Within the scope of the submissions we received we found quite valuable information we were able to unpack ... Shouldn't finding out who the primary actors were have been one of your most urgent priorities? Of course, it was.

The South African Human Rights Commission SAHRC has promised not to give up on finding a solution to the eThekwini water crisis until all areas have running water. The SAHRC said this after receiving a memorandum from the Democratic Alliance DA KZN provincial leader Francois Rodgers during a picket at the SAHRC Durban offices yesterday. The party said it is concerned over the SAHRC's "nonresponse" to issues affecting eThekwini residents. Since the floods in 2022, the water situation in the eThekwini Municipality, particularly in the North of Durban encompassing Phoenix, Tongaat, Durban North, Greenwood Park, Glenashley, Virginia, Sunningdale and Umhlanga has become progressively worse. According to the memorandum the residents of Bester have been without water for 14 years. Rodgers The DA picket outside the SAHRC offices over "ongoing nonresponse" to issues affecting eThekwini residents.

THE South African Human Rights Commission SAHRC has begun imprinting its SHiNE concept into the hearts and minds of countrymen to help form a more coherent society, in response to the violence and racial tensions between communities in KwaZuluNatal endured during the July 2021 unrest. SHiNE or Social Harmony National Effort is the Commission's project that was conceptualised after an eight month nationwide consultative process headed up by Deputy Commissioner, Fatima Chohan.

ALMOST nine years later, six Chatsworth families who were moved from a block of flats to park homes, are still waiting to move back or for the promise of freestanding houses to be delivered on. The residents said the park homes were erected on a primary school ground in Westcliff, due to the homes "collapsing" and a failing sewerage system. Christina Pillay, 81, shares a tworoom park home with her daughter Rosanne Singh, 47, soninlaw, and 12yearold grandson. Singh said they were told that it would take six months for the repairs to be completed at the flats. "But nine years later we are still waiting to go back to our flat. "While we are grateful to have a shelter, how much longer are we expected to wait to have a proper roof over our heads? "My son sleeps on a couch in the same room as my mother.

Claims of an outdated uniform policy which does not accommodate queer, genderfluid, lesbian or other LGBTQl+ pupils are being made against a KwaDwesi school which has found itself at the centre of a heated row. Now calls are being made for the policy to be reviewed. Lungisa High School grade 11 pupils identifying as lesbian are allegedly being singled out, harassed, berated and even ridiculed for wearing trousers. While the situation escalates, a Gqeberha education expert and the SA Human Rights Commission SAIIRC have reiterated the need for reform to accommodate all gender norms.

PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa has been warned that the SA Human Rights Commission SAHRC report into the July 2021 unrest should be a major red flag for him to bulk up the country's defence and stop micromanaging State Security matters. During the release of the report on Monday, SAHRC Commissioner Philile Ntuli said the destruction witnessed during the July 2021 unrest was symptomatic of unresolved systemic conditions, such as postCovid19 economic recovery, high unemployment, lawlessness, discrimination, socioeconomic divides, and issues within the security sector.

THE Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights Commission and the South African Human Rights Commission SAHRC have found that lapses in intelligence along with the police constraints and ability to deal with the 2021 July unrest. This was revealed at the release of both their reports into the 2021 July unrest in Durban yesterday. The SAHRC findings also indicated that the 2021 unrest was a carefully orchestrated event but the cause could not be found and no link could be established to the incarceration of former president Jacob Zuma.

THE South African Human Rights Commission SAHRC and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities CRL Rights Commission have blamed the government for failing to protect the victims of the 2021 July unrest which claimed the lives of more than 335 people in KwaZuluNatal and Gauteng. The COO of SAHRC, Philile Ntuli, revealed that the historical war between Africans and Indians in Cato Manor in 1949 and Inanda in 1985 was one of the reasons behind the rioting.

They previously warned unrest was imminent, with political analyst Arthur Shopola saying he was not surprised by the commission's finding "because that thing was long coming". "A hungry mob is an angry mob. I am using this quotation simply to say that our country's socioeconomic status is very alarming, to a point where unrest is very possible," he said. "At the time, it just needed a trigger and, regrettably, the Constitutional Court pulled the trigger with the arrest order for Zuma.

SAHRC Commissioner Philile Ntuli has revealed that the commission's report had found that July unrest in 2021 was an orchestrated event which required that individuals act with one voice to achieve its end. She said the various state institutions which investigated the events which spread from KZN to Gauteng including the blocking of the N3 and N2 and the destruction of factories, malls and other institutions, were orchestrated.

Many female farm labourers in the racially divided agricultural sector of Limpopo claim they are the targets of ongoing abuse at work, especially in the neighbourhoods of Groblersdal and Marble Hall in the Sekhukhune region. One of the upset women claims that her life has been an agonising nightmare ever since she was wounded in the eye by a rubber bullet while working as a farm worker. Francina Maluleke claims that at a protest called by female workers on Sekhukhune farms, violence broke out, leaving her shot with a rubber bullet and her coworker Portia Mokgabudi run over.

VERULAM residents in Trenance Park who have been without water for almost 100 days, say their relief was shortlived on Tuesday, when water was restored to their taps for a few hours only for them to run dry again. Residents who spoke to The Mercury yesterday said they were fedup and disappointed as their lives were severely disrupted by the ongoing water outages. Protests have erupted in the area and other neighbouring communities affected by the outages. Resident Anusha Ramroop said the situation was dire as they had to constantly fill water containers to be able to do basic chores.

An indignant Nelson Mandela Bay municipality is on a mission to find the person responsible for Photoshopping an image of a road sign, changing William Moffett Expressway to "William Mottle". The manipulated image has gone viral on social media, sending Bay residents into a frenzy. Moffie is a derogatory term used to describe bisexual men, or men seen as timid or unmasculine. Mayor Gary van Niekerk said the incident had angered him. "I am reviled by the reprehensible act of a person altering a prominent city road sign to display an offensive term," he said. "The audacity to tarnish the name of a wellknown road is deeply disturbing, leaving me profoundly astonished." Van Niekerk said municipal authorities were investigating the incident.
