ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) invites members of the media to the three day Regional Training Workshop on Prevention of Torture: Enhancing the Role of SADC National Human Rights Institutions in Combating Torture at the Protea Hotel Balalaika in Sandton (Gauteng).
Countries in the SADC region have in the recent past condemned increasing violent and abusive conduct of security services with reports that State security services (police, intelligence and other paramilitary forces) in Southern Africa are routinely abusing their powers and violating citizens’ rights.
The workshop is structured over three days and will provide an initial exposure to developing investigation skills of the NHRI with regard to torture. It will also bring together civil society organizations (CSOs), law enforcement agents together with the NHRIs with a view of building relations and a common agenda between the participating institutions.
Deliberations of the workshop will further culminate into a clear set of activities at SADC level to combat and prevent torture.
The workshop will be held as follows:
Date: From 24- 26 April 2013
Time: 09:00 am
Venue: Protea Hotel Balalaika (Sandton)
The workshop will be attended by SAHRC & NANHRI Chairperson Lawrence Mushwana, NANHRI Executive Director Gilbert Sebihogo and representatives from NANHRI and APT (Association for the prevention of torture).
