Media Invite: Launch of the NHRI Digital Rights Alliance e-elections statement

17 April 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) is a state institution established under chapter 9 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (“the Constitution”). The Commission is mandated, in terms of section 184(1) of the Constitution, to promote respect for human rights and a culture of human rights; to promote the protection, development and attainment of human rights; and to monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.

Aligned with this mandate, the Commission is committed to ensuring that the upcoming 2024 national elections uphold human rights principles. Historically, elections have witnessed numerous violations, including discrimination, privacy breaches, limitations on freedom of expression, dissemination of misinformation, and hate speech through digital platforms. Given the rapid technological advancements, it is crucial to proactively safeguard these rights during the electoral process.

As part of our commitment to this objective and in preparation for the upcoming election cycle, the Commission has partnered with the International NHRI Digital Rights Alliance to launch an e-elections statement developed by the Digital Rights Alliance. The role of the Commission is to facilitate and coordinate various aspects of the launch.
