The South African Human Rights Commission’s (Commission) Western Cape Provincial Office (WCPO) will, at the invitation of Commissioner Aseza Gungubele, be in Beaufort West to engage with stakeholders. Commissioner Gungubele will visit the region from 23 -24 April 2024 for the purpose of engaging stakeholders there. He will conduct monitoring visits to selected monitoring targets on 23 April 2024 and on 24 April 2024 will meet with stakeholders from a range of government departments and the Municipality. Commissioner Gungubele will also meet with the community later on the same day at the Community Hall in Mandlenkosi.
The WCPO, while in support of Commissioner Gungubele, will also have all programmes (Promotion, Protection and Monitoring) present in Beaufort West with a view to conducting monitoring and reporting on the state of human rights, engaging stakeholders to promote human rights education in the region and conducting a legal clinic to protect human rights.
The WCPO Promotion Unit will host an engagement with its Human Rights Champions (HR Champions), on 23 April2024, at the Thusong Centre, regarding the upcoming National and Provincial Elections 2024 and will in addition the WCPO Protection Unit host a Legal Clinic at the Thusong Centre, where it will be available to receive complaints of human rights violations and provide general legal advice to members of the community. A further Legal Clinic will be held at a community event at the Community Hall in Mandlenkosi, Beaufort West on 24 April 2024.
The WCPO’s Monitoring Unit will be conducting monitoring at various facilities including schools, Elderly Care Facilities, Child and Youth Care Centres, service delivery monitoring for basic rights (access to Water and sanitation) and health care facilities, to name a few.
In execution of its mandate to promote, protect and monitor human rights in South Africa, Commissioner Gungubele and the WCPO look forward to being in the region in order to engage with community members on human rights issues via these available platforms. The outreach and the planned activities present an opportunity to the community of the Central Karoo to directly access the Commission with a view to the realisation of human rights.
