Media Statement: South African Human Rights Commission celebrates Freedom Day and reminds people on the significance of voting.

Attention: Editors and Reporters

27 April 2024

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC/ the Commission) joins the rest of the country in celebrating National Freedom Day 2024. This day reminds us of 27 April 1994 when black people voted for the first time, ushering democracy.

Thirty years later, the Commission is encouraged by renewed interest in the elections and urges those who are eligible to vote to translate energies into huge voter turnouts in the upcoming elections to be held on 29 May 2024. This will play a significant role in shaping democracy.

Aligned with its mandate to support constitutional democracy, the Commission is committed to ensuring that the upcoming 2024 national elections uphold human rights principles. Historically, elections have witnessed numerous violations, including discrimination, privacy breaches, limitations on freedom of expression, dissemination of misinformation, and hate speech through digital platforms. Given the rapid technological advancements, it is crucial to proactively safeguard these rights during the electoral process.

As part of our commitment to this objective and in preparation for the upcoming election cycle, the Commission has partnered with the International National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) Digital Rights Alliance to launch an e-elections statement developed by the Digital Rights.

After the conclusion of the launch, media personnel will have the opportunity to engage directly with the esteemed stakeholders who will be in attendance. This interactive aspect will provide a platform to pose questions, seek clarification, and delve deeper into the message of the statement.

The launch event, to be held in the Eastern Cape, will feature the release of the international statement developed by the International NHRI Digital Rights Alliance, as well as solicit supportive messages from diverse jurisdictions.

The launch will be held as follows:

Date: 30th of April 2024

Time: 10H00 – 13H00

Venue: Nelson Mandela University, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape

The launch will be livestreamed on YouTube: SAHRC1
