The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it is investigating the death of PJ Simelane Secondary School pupil, Tiro Moalusi.

Moalusi committed suicide by ingesting rat poison following a homophobic slur by a student teacher on Tuesday, August 16. The 15-year-old was laid to rest in Soweto on Thursday, .

As the country grapples with the aftermath of a hard lockdown and its related economic challenges, the pattern of human rights complaints received by the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) continues to follow a worrying trend. The 2020/21 Trends Analysis Report (TAR), launched by the commission on July 13, paints a worrying picture of the state of socio-economic condition in the country. Socio-economic rights complaints have now featured among the top three rights violations reported to the commission.

On 13 September 2021, the South African Human Rights Commission in Mpumalanga (“the Commission) received a complaint against Lekwa Local Municipality (“the Municipality”) and the Department of Human Settlements (“DHS”).  The complainant was a community member on behalf of an elderly pensioner and beneficiary of an RDP house, Mrs Gumede*.

The South African Human Rights Commission, Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) is concerned about the reported strike action that has been allegedly undertaken by Amathole District Municipality (ADM) officials pertaining to wage disputes. Media reports have indicated that the said strike action has, amongst other things, resulted in the sabotaging of water infrastructure, which consequently has negatively affected communities and services at large. The Constitution provides that Local Government structures have the objective to ensure the provision of services to communities in a sustainable manner and to promote a safe and healthy environment.
