The South African Human Rights Commission on Thursday said an apology by Matjhabeng mayor Nkosinjani Speelman for using an offensive term in reference to the coloured community of Bronville would not suffice, confirming that it would launch a full investigation once the national lockdown ends.

JOHANNESBURG – The South African Human Rights Commission has signed a historic agreement with UNICEF.
The agreement is meant to advance children’s rights in all spheres, including policies and actions against COVID-19 regardless of migratory status.

The enforcement of lockdown regulations has resulted in 38 reported incidents against the police, ranging from murder, assault and rape to discharging of a firearm.
The allegations, lodged with the police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), include eight deaths and one rape.
Of these cases, six were “deaths owing to police action” and two emanated from “deaths in police custody”.
According to Ipid spokesperson Sontaga Seisa, the two deaths that occurred in police custody took place in Limpopo.

The high court in Pretoria has ordered that the justice minister provide witness protection for whistleblower Thabiso Zulu.

DA interim federal leader John Steenhuisen has threatened to institute legal action against the Msunduzi Municipality for exposing residents to health hazards by failing to maintain the toxic New England Road landfill site. Steenhuisen, who conducted an oversight visit to the dump on Tuesday, said the DA would be writing to Environmental Affairs Minister Barbara Creecy, calling for the national government to intervene. “We will have to force the municipality to comply with regulations and, if needs be, and as last resort, we will consider partnering those individuals who will be instituting legal action against the Msunduzi Municipality,” he said.
