Media Statement: SAHRC Mpumalanga office will be launching its thematic discussion paper on Evictions in Farming Communities at its SAHRC offices in Mbombela

Attention: Editors and Reporters
16 March 2018

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), Mpumalanga Provincial office, will be launching its Thematic Discussion Paper on Evictions in Farming Communities. On 23 November 2017, the office conducted the Provincial Indaba on Evictions in Farming Communities at Mkhondo Local Municipality which emanated from alleged illegal evictions of farm workers, occupiers and dwellers as well as undue delays of finalisation of land claims.

The main objectives of the engagement are to assist civil society organisations, relevant state departments including local authorities and the SAHRC to:
(a)    Consider the coherency of the legislative and policy environment from a rights-based perspective, and recommend to the state at all levels, the adoption of legislative and other measures that will promote the respect for the human rights of farmworkers and farm dwellers;
(b)    Raise awareness and promote advocacy of the human rights of farms dwellers and workers as well as the constitutional and international law obligations that require the human rights of everyone to be respected, protected and promoted; and
(c)    Provide feedback on the outcomes of the Indaba and collaborate in developing a normative practical toolkit to be used by stakeholders in advocating for the rights of farming communities and the effective implementation of the ESTA.

The engagement is scheduled to take place as follows:
Date: 20 March 2018
Place: Mbombela (Nelspruit)
Venue: SAHRC Mpumalanga Boardroom
Time: 10h30 – 15h30
