On 09 April 2018 the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission or SAHRC) initiated an investigation at Tembisa Hospital following media reports of patients being subjected to inhumane treatment at the hands of hospital staff. Arising allegations indicate that the provision of healthcare services at the hospital have been substandard. At the crux of the investigation are allegations that patients are made to sleep on the floor, there are unreasonable delays in providing healthcare services, there is a shortage of medication and qualified staff and patients are ill-treated.
The Commission’s Gauteng Provincial office will conduct a site inspection at the hospital on 15 May 2018 in relation to the above allegations and will also meet with CEO, Dr Lekopane Mogaladi on this date.
The right to access to healthcare services is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution and in light of this the Commission views all related violations in a serious light. As such the Gauteng Provincial office will also be conducting a site visit to Steve Biko Academic Hospital following allegations that the hospital’s oncology ward is under capacitated and on the verge of collapse.
The site visit to Tembisa Hospital will take place as follows:
Time: 12h00
Date: 15 May 2018
Venue: Tembisa Hospital
Ends
