ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters
06 June 2018
In May 2018, the South African Human Rights Commission (“Commission”) initiated an investigation at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital following several reports alleging that there was a shortage of radiation oncologists at the hospital’s oncology ward, a breakdown of vital cancer treatment machines and delays in the provision of health care services to approximately 500 cancer patients who are awaiting radiation treatment.
It is on this basis, the Commission’s Gauteng Provincial office will conduct a site inspection at the hospital on 07 June 2018 in relation to the above allegations and will also meet with CEO, Ms. Gladys Bogoshi and the management of the hospital on this date.
The Commission’s investigation seeks to examine a number of factors including the availability of health care, human resources, physical infrastructure and equipment at the hospital. Moreover, the investigation seeks to examine specific aspects such as waiting times, the quality of health care given to patients and services for vulnerable groups.
The site visit to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital will take place as follows:
Time: 12h00
Date: 07 June 2018
