Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission is to hold an inquiry into recent protest related actions at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital

ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

13 June 2018

On 31 May 2018 hundreds of workers employed by Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital embarked on protest action over unpaid performance bonuses which left the hospital in a chaotic and dishevelled state. This protest action led to a shutdown of the facility. Reports indicate that the protest action severely disrupted the operations of the Hospital, which had a negative impact on the provision of health services to many of the hospital users.
This placed the right of access to adequate health care and other interrelated rights in jeopardy.
In order to obtain clarity as to what transpired on 31 May 2018, the South African Human Rights Commission (‘Commission’) will hold an Inquiry into the matter. The purpose of this Inquiry is to establish what led to the situation, and what will be done going forward to limit the adverse impacts by the exercise of one right at the cost of another.
The Commission has invited the Head of Department of the Gauteng Department of Health, the CEO of the Hospital, the Gauteng SAPS and representatives from the trade unions NEHAWU and PSA, to the inquiry that will be held at the Commission’s offices.

The Inquiry will take place as follows:
Date: 14 June 2018
Time:  09h30
Venue: SAHRC 2nd Floor Training Centre, Braampark Office Park, Braamfontein, Johannesburg
