Media Invite: SAHRC Western Cape Provincial Office to commemorate World Refugee Day

15 JUNE 2018
ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

On 4 December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly in Resolution 55/76 decided that, from 20 June 2001 would be celebrated as World Refugee Day.  Accordingly, the SAHRC WC Provincial Office in partnership with the UCT Refugee Rights Unit and the UNHCR will commemorate this significant day on the International calendar.

The day will be commemorated by hosting a Panel Discussion on the “Securitization of Migration and its Impact on Refugees”.  The securitisation of migration is understood as the process in which perceptions of security problems related to migration emerge and evolve. The purpose of this Panel Discussion is to shed light on the plight of refugees both nationally and internationally in light of the global trend of securitization of migration.

This will be followed by the screening of a series of short films on refugees and their experiences in South Africa.
The details of this event are as follows:

Date:  20 June 2018 (Wednesday)
Time:  10h00 – 14h30
Venue: University of Cape Town (Kramer Law Building)

For further information kindly contact the WC Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission:  Mr Lloyd Lotz, the WC Provincial Manager T: 021 426 2277
