Media Alert: The South African Human Rights Commission takes Velaphi Khumalo to the Equality Court on charges of Hate Speech

Attention: Editors and Reporters
29 June 2018

The South African Human Rights Commission (Gauteng Provincial Office) initiated proceedings against Velaphi Khumalo in the South Gauteng High Court, sitting as an Equality Court in November 2016, following a Facebook post by Khumalo that amounted to hate speech. The trial is set to continue on 02 & 03 July 2018.

In January 2016 Khumalo posted the following on his Facebook Page: "I want to cleanse this country of all white people. We must act as Hitler did to the Jews. I don't believe any more that there is a large number of not so racist whit people. I'm starting to be sceptical even of those within our movement of the ANC.”

The Commission seeks to obtain an order directing Khumalo to issue an unconditional public apology and to pay damages.

The trial will be taking place as follows:

Date:  02 & 03 July 2018
 Time:  08h30
Venue: South Gauteng High Court
