The Commission learnt with shock and sadness that following a short illness Mr Annan passed away in Switzerland on 18 August 2018. The Commission extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Annan.
Mr Annan joined the UN in 1962 and rose through its ranks culminating in his election as Secretary-General of the UN. He served as Secretary-General from January 1997 to December 2006. As Secretary-General Mr Annan, among others, provided leadership in the humanitarian work of the UN. During his tenure he paid attention to Africa particularly on the subject of HIV/AIDS which continues to affect millions of our people.

Upon his retirement from the UN, Mr Annan remained engaged in advancing human rights and good governance in Africa. In his role as a member of the African Union Panel of Eminent African Personalities he played a significant role in bringing peace to areas that were experiencing conflict, for example, Kenya. With specific reference to South Africa, Mr Annan has been a beacon for the advancement of human rights. He visited South Africa on numerous occasions with his most recent visit taking place in July 2018 when he came to participate in activities to mark the 100th Centenary of Nelson Mandela. Mr Annan participated in the Long Walk to Freedom which took place on Constitutional Hill on 19 July 2018 — an event in which some of the staff of the Commission participated.

Mr Annan will be sorely missed.
Once again the Commission extends its most sincere and deepest condolences to his family and friends.
May his soul rest in peace.
