Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission to conduct a site inspection at the Vaal Dam.

ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

31 August 2018

On 03 September 2018 the South African Human Rights Commission (“The Commission”) will conduct an inspection at the Vaal Dam following allegations of raw sewage spilling into the Vaal River.  There are allegations of approximately 150 mega litres of raw sewage flowing into the Rietspruit and Vaal rivers per day. In addition to this, media reports have alleged the presence of an aborted foetus and dead fish in the river which led to residents being advised not to drink or use the water.

The Commission will conduct the inspection in order to assess the state of the Vaal River in relation to the allegations.
The implicated rights to access to clean water, an environment that is not harmful and human dignity   are  fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution and in light of this the Commission views all related violations in a serious light.

The inspection will take place as follows:
Date:  03 September 2018
Time: 11h00
Venue: Stonehaven on Vaal

Ends
