Media Statement: Commissioners of the SAHRC Condemn Racist Utterances by Kessie Nair

Attention Editors and Reporters
21st September 2018

The Commissioners of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) have taken a resolution, in their monthly meeting on Thursday, the 20th September 2018, to condemn in the strongest terms the racist utterances of Mr. Kessie Nair, who directed the K-word at President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.

The Commission’s Kwa-Zulu Natal Provincial Office has instituted an own initiative investigation into the matter on the 19th September 2018, once the footage of Mr. Nair’s utterances went viral via social media and the SAHRC became aware of the incident. The Commission will investigate the matter and keeps in mind that his family has raised concerns in regard his mental capacity.  The Commission is also aware that Mr. Nair is currently in custody on a charge of crimen injuria, until his next court appearance for a bail application.

The Commission views these utterances in a gravely serious light as these increasing utterances, particularly spread via social media, are divisive, damage social cohesion as well as the promotion of human rights. The Commission continues to act on its mandate as set out in section 184 of the Constitution, in its efforts to end the social scourge of racism and racist utterances.
