Media Statement: SAHRC Commemorates International Day of Older Persons

Attention Editors and Reporters
1st October 2018

Today, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or Commission) commemorates International Older Persons Day. On 14th December 1990, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly (through resolution 45/106) designated 1 October the International Day of Older Persons. The theme of the 2018 commemoration is “Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions“.

Older people have always played a significant role in society, as leaders, caretakers, parents, activists and more. As we celebrate International Day of Older Persons, the Commission remembers the contributions and sacrifices made by older persons in pursuit of a free and fair democratic society in South Africa. The national celebration of the centenary of the former President Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu provides a snapshot of the array of older human rights champions that our society is gifted with. In this regard, the Commission wishes to express its gratitude all Older Persons and particularly to the Older Human Rights Champions in South Africa for their contributions.

The Commission notes with regret, however, that many older persons are highly vulnerable, with many falling into poverty, being made victims of abuse and facing unfair discrimination. As a Chapter Nine Institution mandated by the Constitution to promote respect for, observance of and protection of human rights for everyone, the Commission recognises that significant interventions are required in order to prevent violations of the human rights of Older Persons ensure that the impact of violations of their human rights are reversed and that their dignity is maintained in South Africa.

The Commission urges government to ensure that decisive measures are taken in order to alleviate the financial, physical, and other forms of abuse of older persons and to foster a safe and healthy environment for them in South Africa.  Furthermore, the Commission calls on the government to sign and ratify the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights Of Older Persons in Africa (the Protocol) which was adopted by the African Union in January 2016. The protocol is aimed at promoting and protecting the rights of Older Persons and guaranteeing that they fully contribute and participate in society.

End.
