Media Alert: SAHRC Gauteng Provincial Office to visit Randfontein following allegations of raw sewage flowing from the sewage processing plant into Tweelopiespruit and Hartbeespoort Dam

Attention Editors and Reporters

5 November 2018

The South Africa Human Rights Commission (Gauteng Provincial Office), will visit Randfontein tomorrow, this after residents complained that raw sewage is flowing from the Randfontein sewage processing plant into the Tweelopiespruit. The residents allege that raw sewage that enters the plant is let into the river by the Rand West City Municipality without any treatment of the effluent and the untreated black water finds its way to the Hartbeespoort Dam. According to residents, this poses serious risks to the environment and the health of people who are dependent on water from the Hartbeespoort dam system.

The purpose of the visit is to obtain first-hand information from residents and to verify the validity of these allegations. The Commission will also use the opportunity to engage with the representatives of the municipality to test these allegations and discuss steps taken to address concerns regarding the maintenance of sewage reticulation and sewage works.

Details of the fact-finding mission are as follows:

Date: 06 November 2018

Time: 11:00

Venue: Randfontein Waste Water Treatment Works
