URGENT MEDIA INVITE: BRIEFING ON TORTURE AND MARIKANA
SAHRC Chair Adv. Mushwana, Deputy Minister of Justice, Mr Nel, invite the media to a news briefing on torture and Marikana
Members of the media are invited to a Press Conference to be hosted by South African Human Rights Commission Chairperson Adv. Lawrence Mushwana, Deputy-Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Mr Andries Nel, and Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights Mrs Dupe Atoki who also sits in a Committee for the Prevention of Torture in Africa.

The purpose of this event is to brief the media on the outcome of the multi-stakeholder meeting which the South African Human Rights Commission held jointly with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Association for the Prevention of Torture, to discuss issue relating to torture and to look at the progress since the adoption of the Robben Island Guidelines against torture in 2002.
Furthermore, the briefing will shed more light into the content of the letter that the AU Commission has written to the South African government to request an explanation regarding the recent issues relating to the situation at the Lonmin Mine in Marikana, Rustenburg.
