Illegal evictions threaten a range of human rights. These includes the rights to human dignity, safety and security of the person, privacy, health, access to adequate housing, education and life, as well as freedom of movement. Evictions have a drastic effect on people’s social, economic, physical and psychological well-being. In this regard, the Commission in the province has observed that the phenomenon of evictions is still continuing unabated. Farming communities also have limited access to government services and information on human rights.
These roadshows are expected to serve as a platform to amplify awareness on pertinent issues relating to access to justice, Children’s rights, the Commission’s child friendly complaints handling procedure, access to information and many other rights as provided in the Bill of Rights.
The Human Rights roadshows are an opportunity for the Commission to directly interact with the communities and to increase the Commission’s visibility, as well as promote its mandate. The roadshows will be at identified institutions in Dihlabeng, which include informal settlement, farms, disability centres and community members at large. These roadshows will take the form of campaigns and information sessions. Information and promotional material will be disseminated.
The Commission together with local legal advice centres, government departments and the farming organisations will engage with the community members on their respective lines of work and to raise awareness on the role of the law, role of the Commission and provide general legal advice.
