This year the Free State Provincial Office intends to partner with IEC and Association for Persons with Disabilities Free State to commemorate the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. The Free State Provincial Office will follow a theme for this year’s International Disability for Persons with Disability which is ‘’ Empowering persons with disabilities and ensuring inclusiveness and equality’’. This theme focuses on empowering persons with disabilities for the inclusive, equitable and sustainable development envisaged in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It is critical to ensure, in this regard, the full and equal participation of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and create enabling environments by, for and with persons with disabilities.
People with disabilities still face serious challenges, from physical obstacles of inaccessible buildings to systematic barriers in employment and difficulties to be included within the schooling environment. Employment of persons with disabilities remains a grave challenge.
The Commission’s mandate also include, that the Commission must promote respect for human rights and a culture of human rights in relation to persons with disabilities, promote the protection, development and attainment of human rights of persons with disabilities and monitoring of the human rights of persons with disabilities. It is in this light that the Free State Provincial Office together with its partners will embark on a commemorative event that marks the International Day of Persons with Disability.
