Media Statement: SAHRC Deeply Concerned by the Rape of a Nine-Year-Old Schoolboy, Chairperson of the Commission Visits School.

Attention Editors and Reporters
22nd February 2019

The Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission or SAHRC), Advocate Bongani Majola, visited Curro Academy in Mahikeng, today, Friday, 22nd February 2019.  This visit followed media reports of the rape of the nine-year-old schoolboy at the school.

The Commission notes the investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and urges that the perpetrator be brought to justice. Chairperson Majola met with the Executive Head of the school and the Commission will look into the matter and monitor the ongoing investigations.

The SAHRC is deeply concerned with this incident and other incidents of sexual abuse of children at schools. Schools are institutions which are meant to be places of safety, protecting the basic human rights of children, serving the best interests of the child, where children should be free in the pursuit of their education.
