Media Advisory: The SAHRC to continue its probe into the health system in Gauteng

Attention: Editors and reporters

Date: 01 April 2019

The South African Human Rights Commission has invited the Head of the Provincial Department of Health in Gauteng to appear before it on Tuesday, 02 April 2019, as it continues with its investigation into the health system in the province.

The Commission’s investigation seeks to examine a number of factors, including the availability of health care, financial aspects, human resources, physical infrastructure and equipment and drugs in the Gauteng Province. It will further probe specific aspects of governance, access such as user fees, transport costs, emergency transport and waiting times, as well as the specific aspects of acceptability in terms of consent, staff attitudes, cultural acceptance and quality of health care and services for vulnerable groups.

The investigation follows the Commission’s site visits in 2018 at 5 (five) of the province’s health care facilities, namely, Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital, Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Hospital, Thelle Mogoerane Hospital and the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.

Details of the meeting are as follows:

Date: 02 April 2019
