Media Statement: The South African Human Rights Commission to intervene in Alexandra protests

Attention: Editors and Reporters
Date: 03 April 2019

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) will visit Alexandra today to get a first-hand experience of the situation on the ground. This visit follows reports that the situation in Alexandra was on a knife-edge as protests have escalated.

The Commission will probe possible violations of the right to basic education (for the children that have been prevented from attending school); the right of access to adequate housing and the right to freedom and security of the person, particularly, the right to be free from all forms of violence from either public or private sources should it be found that there were any injuries sustained during the protests.

The Commission intends engaging with the Alexandra community to establish the main causes of the protests. The Commission will further engage with the City of Johannesburg and the Provincial Department of Human Settlements to establish what their plans are with regard to housing development in the area and other socio-economic development initiatives.

Details of the visit are as follows:
Date: 03 April 2019
