Media Statement: The South African Human Rights Commission to intervene in Sibanye Gold strike

09 April 2019
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) will visit the Sibanye Gold, Driefontein Division, in Carltonville tomorrow to get a first-hand experience of the situation on the ground. This visit follows reports of a four-and-half month long strike at three of Sibanye Gold mines, in which nine people have been killed so far.

The Commission will seek to examine whether the mining company and the labour unions have exercised their best endeavours to resolve the ongoing industrial dispute and whether sufficient safeguards and measures have been employed to ensure the safety of employees and prevent the outbreak of violence. The Commission will further examine the role played by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in dealing with incidents and responding to the threat and outbreak of violence between any parties.

The Commission intends engaging with the labour unions, management and the police to establish the causes of the prolonged labour strike and the resultant deaths.

Details of the visit are as follows:

Date: 10 April 2019
Time: 11h00
