Media Alert: The South African Human Rights Commission to probe Rustervaal evictions in Vereeniging

11 April 2019
Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) will visit Rustervaal Informal Settlement today after a resident allegedly died after he was shot with rubber bullets and a member of the Red Ants member was apparently beaten to death by angry mobs.

The Commission will probe possible violations in the process of evictions and the right to freedom and security of the person, particularly, the right to be free from all forms of violence from either public or private sources.

The Commission intends to invite the Emfuleni Local Municipality, Red Ants, the South African Police Service and the South African Board of Sheriffs to appear before the Commission on Wednesday, 17 April 2019, to establish the circumstances under which the evictions took place, the facts leading to the eviction, the identity and personal circumstances of the members of the informal settlement and how they came to be on the land in question.

Details of the visit are as follows:

Date: 11 April 2019
Time: 13h00
Place: Rustervaal Informal Settlement, Vereeniging
