Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission to hold public meetings following Rus-ter-vaal evictions in Vereeniging

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) will hold public meetings in Rus-ter-vaal and Ramaphosaville Informal Settlement tomorrow. This follows the deaths of two people on 10 April 2019 when Red Ants Security was called upon to perform an eviction in the area on behalf of the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

The Commission has invited the Executive Mayor of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, the Gauteng MEC for COGTA and Human Settlements, Red Ants, the South African Police Service and the South African Board of Sheriffs to be part of these meetings and to appear before it on Wednesday, 17 April 2019, to establish housing challenges in the area, the circumstances under which the evictions took place, the facts leading to the eviction, the identity and personal circumstances of the members of the informal settlement and how they came to be on the land in question.
