Media Advisory - South African Human Rights Commission to Host an Inquiry into Recent Alexandra Protests

The South African Human Rights Commission (“The Commission”) will host an inquiry into the recent violent protests in Alexandra Township. This inquiry will form part of the Commission’s investigation, in collaboration with the Public Protector’s office into the service delivery complaints that have given rise to the protests.

The purpose of this inquiry is to focus on the human rights aspects that informed the protests such as access to adequate housing, water and sanitation and an environment that is not harmful. The Commission seeks to provide long lasting solutions that will ensure an improved quality of life for the people of Alexandra.

The inquiry will take place as follows:
