Media Advisory: The Acting Director-General of the Department of Home Affairs Subpoenaed to Appear before the South African Human Rights Commission on Thursday 16 May 2019

15 May 2019

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) has issued a subpoena (Notice to Appear) against the Acting Director-General of the Department of Home Affairs, Mr Thulani Mavuso, to appear before the Commission on Thursday, 16 May 2019 to explain the Department’s failure to cooperate with the Commission as required in section 181(3) of the Constitution and sections 4(2) and 13(4) of the South African Human Rights Commission Act, 2013.

Among others, the Commission has been trying for almost a year to get the Department of Home Affairs to respond to or address complaints alleging that the Department takes an inordinate long time in rendering services to the public, particularly in respect of applications for asylum and permanent residence permits.

The hearing will take place as follows:

Date: Thursday, 16 May 2019

Time: 10h00

Venue: South African Human Rights Commission, Main Boardroom, 4th Floor, Forum III, Braampark, Braamfontein
