Media Invite: SAHRC KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Office will support and participate at the major workshops and exhibitions hosted by The Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs: Consumer Affairs Division

Attention: Editors and Reporters

23 May 2019

The South African Human Rights Commission (“Commission”) KZN Provincial Office will be participating at the major workshops and exhibition hosted by the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs: Consumer Affairs Division, under the theme “Food Safety Workshops on Expired Goods”. The Commission considers these workshops to be critical within the human rights framework, in light of the various incidents and allegations that have risen pertaining the production and selling of the so called “fake foods”.

The interventions will provide a platform for communities to be sensitised on human rights, particularly on the right to have access to sufficient food as provided for in the Constitution; to engage directly with the Commission on matters that affect them; and to lodge complaints with the Commission.

The Commission will further address various human rights issues which have emerged from the complaints received by the Commission i.e. equality and discrimination, access to housing, access to education, access to information among others.
