Media Advisory: The South African Human Rights Commission to Host a Pre-Launch of the NPM with Civil Society and Media in Cape Town

17 July 2019

Attention:  Editors and Reporters

On 18 July 2019 the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) together with the African Policing Civilian Oversight Forum (APCOF) will host a civil society and media engagement in preparation of the official launch of the National Mechanism for Torture Prevention (NPM) in Cape Town. The recent establishment of the NPM under the auspices of the SAHRC represents an important first step in renewed efforts to combat and prevent torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in all places of detention across South Africa.

This event will provide delegates with information on the NPM mandate and structure, and plans for its first year of operation. Delegates will also be provided with expert commentary and recommendations on critical issues, including the current gaps in monitoring places of detention in South Africa and how these can be addressed, and how the NPM can ensure that the information received and reported on by the NPM meets the requirements for independence under OPCAT.

Details of the event are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 18 July 2019
