16 JANUARY 2013
ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters
Education is an important tool for the development of an individual, society and the nation as a whole.
It is for this reason that the South African Human Rights Commission plans to launch the Basic Education Charter.
The Charter was developed with the aim to provide a common, legally grounded planning, monitoring and advocacy framework for use by the SAHRC and all relevant stakeholders to ensure and guide the realization of the access to basic education.
The charter provides a statement of the various legal obligations on the State to ensure the realisation of the right to basic education; the services and support that must be provided to children, and the educational outcomes that must be achieved by children.
The launch will be held as follows:
DATE: Thursday, 31 January 2013
VENUE: SAHRC Head Offices
Braampark
TIME: 11:00 – 13:00
The Charter launch will bring together academics, government officials, experts, NGOs and learners. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is also expected to attend.
