Media Advisory: SAHRC Chairperson to inspect health facilities in the KwaZulu-Natal Province

2 September 2019

ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

The Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, Adv. Bongani Majola, will be conducting a Provincial Visit in the KwaZulu-Natal Province from Monday, 2 September to 6 September 2019. The purpose of this visit is to inspect and assess the status of some of the public health care facilities in the province. The Chairperson also hopes to learn more on the current state of access to oncology treatment in KZN following the Commission’s June 2017 investigative report on access to oncology treatment in the province.

The provincial tour is in line with the Commission’s mandate contained in Section 184(1) (b) of our Constitution which obliges the Commission to promote human rights and a culture of human rights, to promote the protection of human rights, and to monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.

As part of his visit to the province, the Chairperson intends to meet and have in-depth discussions with the MEC for Health, the Honourable Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu and with the Premier, the Honourable Sihle Zikalala. In this regard, the Chairperson has already sent letters to their respective offices informing them of the visit and seeking meetings with them in order to discuss various issues relating to the status of public health care in the province.
