14 February 2013
ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) invites members of the media to the roundtable discussion on illegal mining in the Gauteng Province.
The main aim of the roundtable discussion is to engage with relevant stakeholders about the human rights concerns associated with illegal mining; possible areas for intervention; appropriate procedures and processes to be followed in respect of handling complaints related to illegal mining; creating awareness about the issue of illegal mining in line with the Commission’s advocacy objectives.
The roundtable comes at the time when media reported the incidents this week where illegal miners were trapped, some died, at an abandoned Durban Roodepoort Deep mine on the West Rand.
The roundtable discussion will be held as follows:
Date: 15 February 2013,
Time: 09:00 – 14:00,
Venue: SAHRC Offices, Forum 3, Braampark Office Park; Braamfontein, Johannesburg
The discussion will be facilitated by SAHRC Commissioner Janet Love whose focus area is on International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and external guests including the Chamber of Mines Anton Van Achterbergh and Prof Tracy Lynn Humbly from Wits University School of Law.
