Media Alert: SAHRC North West Provincial Office to hold a stakeholder engagement with the Department of Education regarding challenges in Special Schools

Attention: Editors and Reporters

3 September 2019

The North West Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will attend a key stakeholder engagement meeting with the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Department of Education.

The meeting is aimed at discussing challenges in Special School. The SAHRC will do a presentation on human rights issues affecting learners and staff members at Special School. The SAHRC will base its presentation on the Report of the North West Provincial Investigative Hearing into Lack of Safety and Security Measures in Schools for Children with Disabilities which was launched on 8 August 2019 at North West School for the Deaf in Leeudoringstad. The SAHRC found that the current state of much Special School infrastructure, particularly hostels, in the NW province poses a direct and imminent threat to the health and safety of learners with disabilities. Many children with disabilities are not safe in Special School hostels. The report is accessible at https://www.sahrc.org.za/index.php/sahrc-publications/hearing-reports
