Media Statement: SAHRC Chairperson Bongani Majola meets Mpumalanga and MEC for Health

Attention: Editors and Reporters

12 September 2019

The Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, Advocate Bongani Majola, will be meeting with the Honourable Premier of Mpumalanga, Ms Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane, and her MEC for Health, Ms Sasekani Manzini, from 08:00 to 09:30 tomorrow, Friday 13 September 2019, to discuss issues pertaining to the status of health care in Mpumalanga province.

The meeting follows the Chairperson’s visit and inspection of some of the hospitals and discussions with hospital authorities in the province. A number of challenges were observed that inhibit full access to health care which the Chairperson intended to discuss with the Provincial Government but was not able to do so due to the unavailability of the Premier during that week. Those matters will be discussed at this meeting as well as the plans of the Provincial Government going forward. The Chairperson will also seek an update on the actions that the Provincial Government has taken in relation to recommendations previously made by the Commission to the Province with regard to access to health care.

The Chairperson will thereafter be available to respond to media queries regarding the meeting at the SAHRC Provincial Office, 34 Brown Street, Nelspruit at 10h30am.
