Media Advisory: SAHRC releases its Investigative Report into the Impact of Rural Land Use and Ownership Patterns on human rights in South Africa

Attention: Editors and Reporters

Monday, 16 September 2019

The South African Human Rights Commission hosted a Public Inquiry into the Impact of Rural Land Use and Ownership Patterns on human rights in South Africa. Land has always been a prominent and emotive issue in South Africa. Our history of colonialism, violent conquest, dispossession, forced removals and racially skewed distribution has left us with a complex and difficult legacy.

Redress, accountability and rural land reform is are key components of the progressive realisation of human rights. It was therefore appropriate for the Commission to facilitate a broad exploratory inquiry.

For the purposes of the hearing, only civil society stakeholders were invited to present information, by providing both oral and written submissions to the SAHRC. The Hearing Panel consisted of Commissioner Chris Nissen, external Panellist Professor Ruth Hall, and Dr Shanelle van der Berg.
