Media Statement: Information Regulator and SAHRC to host International Day for the Universal Access to Information

26 September 2019
ATTENTION: Editors and Reporters

The Information Regulator of South Africa and the South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission or the SAHRC) will co-host celebrations for the International Day for Universal Access to Information (commonly called the Access to Information Day or IDUAI) in collaboration with various stakeholders on 27 September 2019. The celebrations will take place at the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa Campus.

Partners for this event include UNESCO, the South African National Commission for UNESCO, the Department of Communications, Telecommunications and Postal Services, the University of Pretoria (UP), the UP’s Centre for Human Rights, the Information for All Programme (IFAP), Media Monitoring Africa, and the African Centre of Excellence for Information Ethics.

IDUAI, previously known as the Right to Know day, is celebrated by the international community on 28th September each year. This day commemorates the importance of the right of access to information as a right necessary for transparency, accountable government, good governance more broadly, and for the realisation of various other rights including the right to freedom of expression and socio-economic rights. The right of access to information is of particular significance domestically, especially given increased instances of poor governance, corruption (including State Capture) and irregular spending within South Africa, coupled with systemic violations of socio-economic rights that require access to information to be exposed and remedied. The importance of this enabling right is underscored by its inclusion as a fundamental human right in section 32 of the South African Constitution.

This year, a crucial prerequisite for the exercise of the right of access to information – namely universal internet access – will be explored.
The Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services, Honourable Stella Tembisa Ndabeni-Abrahams, will deliver the Keynote Address. The Chairperson of the Information Regulator, Advocate Pansy Tlakula as well as the Chairperson of the SAHRC, Advocate Bongani Majola along with other numerous dignitaries from government and the media will speak at the event.

Members of the media are invited to the event.
