10 October 2019
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will commemorate International Day of Older Persons at the KwaMashu Christian Care Society, a residential facility for older persons. In 1990, the United Nations General Assembly declared 01 October as the International Day of Older Persons and later went on to adopt a number of instruments aimed at advancing and promoting the rights of older persons. The day is celebrated annually, across the globe to recognise the contributions of senior citizens and to examine issues that affect their everyday lives.
The theme adopted for 2019, “The Journey to Age Equality,” is aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 10 which recognizes that development will only be achievable if it is inclusive of all ages. Empowering older persons in all dimensions of development, including promoting their active participation in the social, economic and political lives to ensure their inclusiveness and reduce inequalities. The intervention is designed to raise awareness on the rights of older persons and to create a platform to engage with older persons on the issues they are faced with.
