SAHRC Appalled by the Assault on Abigail Kubeka

25 October 2019

ATT: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or the Commission) has learnt, with shock, through media reports of the alleged assault against legendary South African musician and actress, Abigail Kubeka.

The assault against Kubeka, aged seventy four years of age, is alleged to have occurred on the 16th October 2019, following a motor vehicle collision with a taxi (Toyota Quantum) at a traffic circle near Orlando. It is alleged that the driver of the taxi alighted and assaulted Kubeka, with her being struck in the face and mouth.

The Commission is shocked and strongly condemns this barbaric act and is particularly concerned by this incident in light of South Africa’s high rate of violence against women, often described as a ‘war on women’. In a society built on the notion of Ubuntu and respect for elders, the assault against Kubeka flies in the face of the South African society we all wish to foster.

This incident and numerous others cannot be merely dismissed as sporadic acts of criminality, but needs to be viewed within a concerning light of the lack of upholding and respecting the basic human rights of all within South Africa.

The SAHRC will be looking into the matter and reach out to Abigail Kubeka and establish if she needs any further assistance with the matter.

The Commission, in the interim, calls on the South African Police Service (SAPS) and all relevant authorities to continue in conducting a full criminal investigation and bring the perpetrator to book.
