The South African Human Commission, (the Commission or SAHRC) in collaboration with the Human Rights Institute of South Africa (HURISA) will commemorate African Human Rights Day through a dialogue at Constitution Hill on 7 November 2019 under the African Union (AU) theme for this year “Year of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons: Towards durable solutions to forced displacement in Africa”.
The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights is the basis for the African human rights system and entered into force on 21 October 1986. The instrument embraces the aspirations of the African people for effective human rights and freedoms.
The theme demonstrates the urgent need for African countries to collaborate and ensure the inalienable right to free, dignified and productive lives of all citizens and create the necessary conditions for their citizens to return home.
The commemoration is aimed at reflecting on the human rights situation on the continent and to recommit Member States to the promotion and protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa.
The event presents an opportunity for reflection and reignition of the historical significance of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights (Charter). Further, the discussions will also focus on the issues of internal displacement in Africa, highlight the success and challenges of the displaced; and the need to unite as nations in supporting and defending the principles of fundamental human rights.
