Media Alert: Members of the Media Invited to Seminar by the SAHRC on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR)

26 November 2019

ATT: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC or the Commission) will host a seminar, hosted by its Research Unit, on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR), on Wednesday, the 27th November 2019, at the Commission’s Head Office at 33 Hoofd Street, Forum 3, Braampark, Braamfontein, 2001.

The ICESCR is a multilateral treaty adopted by the United Nations through General Assembly Resolution 2200A (XXI), and came in force from 3 January 1976. It commits its parties to work toward the granting of economic, social, and cultural rights (ESCR) including labour rights and the right to health, the right to education, and the right to an adequate standard of living. These rights, as well as other socio-economic and cultural rights, find expression in Chapter Two of the South African Constitution, the Bill of Rights.

The seminar is apt within a South African context of deep routed inequality, poverty and unemployment.  The seminar will examine South Africa’s Country Report as well as a response by the SAHRC and civil society representatives.

The keynote address will be delivered by Prof Sandra Liebenberg, Vice-Chair of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights as well as HF Oppenheimer Chair in Human Rights, Stellenbosch University. The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development will also provide an address via video conferencing.
