5 February 2020

ATT: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the SAHRC or the Commission) notes the concerns raised by Member of Parliament, Advocate Glynnis Breytenbach and Member of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services, in a public opinion piece.

The Commission will engage the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on these concerns.

The Commission however stresses that it has been actively doing its work independently, without fear or favour, in terms of its Constitutional Mandate as set out in Chapter Nine of the Constitution; protecting, promoting and monitoring the attainment of the human rights as set out in Chapter Two of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights.
