All members of the media and the public are encouraged to watch and participate in the webinar.
The highly contagious and potentially fatal strain of the Corona Virus, COVID-19, has forced the State’s hand in declaring a state of national disaster, implementing a national lockdown, in terms of the Disaster Management Act 57 of 2002. These conditions have given rise to two important questions around respecting human rights under extraordinary circumstances as well as exploring innovative means to promote human rights.
The collaboration between the Commission and Mail and Guardian addresses both these important issues. The webinar, with Advocate Bongani Majola, Chairperson of the Commission, as the presenter, will address far ranging human rights which have emerged during the lockdown including: education, housing, freedom and security of the person and dignity.
Since we are still confined to our homes, to maintain social distancing and stem the spread of COVID-19, lockdown conditions have forced everyone, including the SAHRC, to find new innovative means to embrace digital technologies and the Fourth Industrial Revolution in fulfilling its Constitutional mandate of promoting human rights. These extraordinary circumstances have not only presented challenges but have given us new opportunities to fulfill our mandate.
The Commission and Mail and Guardian is excited in interacting with as many as possible through this live, free webinar.
