Manthata tragically succumbed to COVID-19 related complications at the age of 81, at the One Military Hospital outside Pretoria, on Friday evening, the 10th July 2020.
The Commission expresses its deepest condolences to his spouse, family, friends and loved ones. The Commission wishes them strength and peace during their time of loss.
Manthata has left an indelible mark on the South Africa scene in fighting for justice and human rights. He dedicated his life in his service to equality, freedom and dignity for all. The Commission can only echo Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana, who describes him as the epitome of integrity and dedication.
He is most remembered as one of the United Democratic Front leaders who were convicted in the infamous, long-running 1985 Delmas Treason Trial along with Mosiuoa Lekota, Reverend Frank Chikane and Popo Molefe.
He also served as a leader of the South African Student’s Association, sat on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and served as a Commissioner of the South African Human Rights Commission.
Manthata was born in November 29, 1939 in Soekmekaar in Limpopo Province. In 1967, he began teaching at Sekano Ntoane High School in Soweto, where he became known as a rigorous, critical teacher who encouraged political debates among his students. Some of his students included, current President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa and former Mayor of Johannesburg, from 2000 to 2011, Amos Masondo.
