Media Statement on the Apology of Mr Tony Ehrenreich in the SA Jewish Board of Deputies matter

Attention: Editors and Reporters
23 July 2020

The South African Human Rights Commission welcomes the apology from Mr Tony Ehrenreich, to the South African Jewish Board of Deputies regarding a particular statement that circulated on social media in August 2014 which the Commission, after investigation of the complaint, had found demonstrates a clear intention to promote hatred of the members of the Second Complainant in the matter, the SAJBD. The Commission had directed that Mr Ehrenreich apologise to the SAJBD for the statement in question and hereby confirms that such apology has indeed been made by him.

In apologizing, Mr. Ehrenreich has said, among others “

“After due consideration of the findings and recommendations of the SAHRC, that I have violated certain sections of PEPUDA  , I have come to the conclusion that in the interest of promoting National Unity and setting a good example , that it would be appropriate, to tender an apology for my statements  on Facebook  on 13 August 2014.  Whilst it was never my intention to promote violence, I understand how my statement can be construed to promote violence in this context. ..”
I further apologise to the Jewish Community and all South Africans for the rash statements that I made, in relation to an “eye for an eye”. I commit myself to a more thoughtful and considered approach to my statements and utterances in future. I however remain committed to fighting oppression wherever it is found and especially in the Middle East, which Nelson Mandela said is linked to our own struggle against oppression in SA. I will however strive to do this in a responsible manner which promotes the values of freedom, equality and dignity in South Africa and across the world.  I am committed to the values of the Constitution. I thank the SA Human Rights Commission for the manner in which this matter was handled and for pointing out the error in this statement. The opportunity for honest reflection which allows one to learn from past conduct has been immeasurable, as it is my intention to contribute to justice and peace in South Africa and the World”

The Commission takes this opportunity to thank the parties concerned for the constructive manner in which they engaged through this investigation and urges all South Africans, in the interests of social cohesion and nation building, to take the time to consider their utterances whether on social or other media. The potential consequences of speech which is either irresponsibly made or deliberately designed to bring about a particular perception, are extremely negative, especially in a society as traumatised as South Africa is.

The Commission urges the responsible and constructive use of social media but importantly especially urges leaders across all sectors of society to be mindful of the manner in which they communicate. Words have immense power and have shown their propensity for the either positive or negative power to influence throughout history.
