Attention: Editors and Reporters
10 November 2020
The recent protests in Senekal by farmers, organisations and communities were occasioned by the alleged killing of a farm manager Mr Brendin Horner at Paul Roux, in the Eastern Free State. This has since resulted in racial and socio-economic tensions in these farming towns.
The South African Human Rights Commission has thus seen a need for an urgent intervention on the matter. A consultative meeting with various stakeholders (SAPS, Setsoto Municipality, Community leaders, Religious leaders, Agric-SA, NGOs and many other stakeholders) was held on 22 October 2020 in Senekal and questions affecting various government departments / organisations were raised. The Commission therefore seeks to ensure that there is restoration of social cohesion, peace and stability in the areas by leading a multi-stakeholder engagement, which is intended to discuss a wide range of challenges faced by these farming communities.
Various government departments, stake institutions as important stakeholders will also participate in the discussions.
Details of the Engagement are as follows:
Venue: Senekal Town Hall
Date: 10 November 2020
Time: 09h00
All media outlets and representatives are invited to attend.
