Media Advisory: The SAHRC to Convene a Day of Inquiry at Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital

Attention: Editors and Reporters

Date: 10 November 2020

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) has embarked upon an investigation into Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital (“the Hospital”) following media reports that have shed light on a number of incidents that have brought the safety of patients and staff into question. Furthermore, the Commission has become aware of a number of reports of maladministration and the ill treatment of staff at the hospital.

In light of the above the Commission will convene a day of inquiry with the view to test the veracity of the allegations and to evaluate the extent to which the right to access to healthcare services and interrelated rights have been violated and to craft long term solutions.

The Inquiry will be attended by the Gauteng Department of Health and the senior management team and union representatives from Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital.

The meeting will take place as follows:

Date: 11 November 2020
Time: 10:00
Venue: Bheki Mlangeni District Hospital, CEO’s Boardroom, First Floor.
