Media Release: SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office to conduct a provincial hearing into the status of schools for learners with special needs

Attention: Editors and Reporters

17 November 2020

The SAHRC Limpopo Provincial Office will be conducting a provincial hearing into the status of schools for learners with special needs. The SAHRC has received an increase in complaints relating to the right to basic education of learners with special needs, and the alleged unresponsiveness of the Department of Education in Limpopo in respect of addressing the challenges these schools experience.
On the first day of the hearing, special needs school representatives as well as other stakeholders within the disability sector have been invited to give evidence before the SAHRC. The SAHRC has also called upon the Department of Education in Limpopo to appear before it and provide evidence under oath on the second day of the hearing proceedings.

The Provincial Hearing further aims to assist the SAHRC to make findings into whether the Limpopo Department of Basic Education is adequately assisting children with special needs in the province to access their rights to basic education. In the event of an adverse finding, the inquiry will aim to make recommendations on appropriate redress. The Provincial Hearing is scheduled as follows:

Date                :18 - 19 NOVEMBER 2020
